Other Sources of Funding
A variety of funding opportunities are available to both new and current students pursuing graduate studies at Concordia University. All awards indicated on this site are funded by either: internal (Concordia University and its donors), or external (government and industry) sources.
Important note: These awards represent a small sample of opportunities available to graduate students. Those seeking additional funding are strongly encouraged to also explore alternate sources—in addition to the Awards Directory (e.g. governments, charitable organizations, search engines etc.).
New students (applying for admission to a Master’s or Doctoral program) are now automatically considered for all Internal Awards; there is no separate application process.
Current students may apply for select awards disbursed through Open Competition.
These prestigious awards may be offered to students starting their degree program at Concordia who at the same time will begin receiving full external fellowships/scholarships from a designated provincial (Québec) or federal granting agency.
PhD candidates may receive a Special Entrance Award valued at $10,000 during the first year of tenure of their External Award
At the Master’s level, students may receive a Special Entrance Award valued at $6,000 in the first year of tenure of their External Award.
The Doctoral Award of Excellence is currently under review.
External award recipients are encouraged to contact the School of Graduate Studies for eligibility criteria and any additional information.
All awards are subject to Concordia’s Regulations on Holding Multiple Awards Simultaneously. While it is advantageous to apply for as many awards as possible; note that there is a limit to the total funding an individual student may receive at the same time.
Funded by Concordia University and its donors, there are three types of Internal Awards available:

There is an Open Competition for select awards for which all students are eligible. These awards range in value of up to $10,000 per year, and are granted based on the applicant’s ranking in the competition. These awards include, but are not limited to, the following:

Current students, who are registered and in good standing, may may apply as long as they meet eligibility requirements. Deadline is February 20, 2012 for the 2012-2013 academic year. Download the application form
Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need, this Scholarship is open to new and current International students within the first two years of the Master’s program, and within the first four years of the Doctoral program.
New students are automatically considered for this award as part of the admissions process; there is no separate application required. However, please note that only qualifying candidates will be contacted and requested to submit a Financial Need Assessment form (pages 2-3 of the PTS application) for final selection.
Current students may apply provided eligibility requirements are met.

Application deadline is Faculty-specific and may be confirmed with your respective Graduate Program Director. Deadline is early 2012 for the 2012-2013 academic year. Applications are made available accordingly.

Concordia Accelerator Awards
Valued at $5000, with an additional possible $1000 for early graduation, Concordia Accelerator Awards are granted on a competitive basis to qualified, registered graduate students in thesis or thesis-equivalent programs. Deadlines are announced during the academic year. Download the application form
Graduation Bonus
Completing Master or Doctoral degree requirements in a timely matter has its perks. Qualified students can receive a graduation BONUS of up to $2,500. Deadlines vary depending on anticipated graduation. Apply by:

Funding for Conference Presentations
Funds are available to registered graduate students for presentations at major scholarly conferences, or artistic exhibitions in a peer-reviewed or juried context. Deadlines are announced during the academic year. Download the application form | Download the referee form
Research Assistantships
Many graduate students receive support in the form of a stipend paid by a faculty member holding a research grant. Contact your department Graduate Program Director or thesis supervisor for possibilities.
Teaching Assistantships
Faculties typically allocate funds annually to individual departments for teaching assistants, markers, lab demonstrators, conference leaders, etc. Contact your department Graduate Program Director for details.

Employment
On-campus employment is a great way for graduate students to supplement typical sources of award funding. Contact the Counseling and Development Office—Career and Placement Service located at 2070 Mackay, Room 106 (SGW campus) and/or the Financial and Awards Office located at 1550 de Maisonneuve blvd W., Room 220 (SGW campus) concerning the Work Study Program.
Note: Graduate Fellowship holders are typically prohibited from working on- or off-campus in excess of ten hours per week. Recipients are advised to study the terms of their award carefully, and consult with the Graduate Awards Office.
There are three types of External Awards available:
The Québec government offers Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral student scholarships through its Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC), the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQRNT), Fonds de recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ) and the Institut de recherche en santé et securité du travail du Québec (IRSST).
Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (landed immigrants), and Québec residents having resided in the province for at least one year by the application deadline (having both filed Québec income tax and possessing a valid Québec Medicare card).
International Students: The PBEEE award program is open to international Doctoral and Postdoctoral students only. It is administered by FQRNT but candidates from all disciplines are eligible to apply. Candidates cannot apply directly to the agency. Only candidates nominated by a University may submit an application to the provincial competition.
Applications and eligibility requirements are available on respective government agency websites by late August. Deadline to apply is in October (July for PBEEE) for awards tenable the following academic year.
At the time of application, the candidate may be a senior undergraduate student, graduate student, or either an undergraduate or graduate degree holder not currently enrolled in a program, but planning to pursue graduate studies the following academic year.
Numerous Canadian government agencies offer Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral fellowships and graduate scholarships annually through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and more.
Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (landed immigrants).
Applications and eligibility requirements are indicated on respective government agency websites by late August. Deadline may be as early as October 5th annually, in some cases.
At time of application, the candidate may be a senior undergraduate/graduate student, or an unregistered undergraduate/graduate degree holder planning to pursue graduate studies the following academic year.
The Tri-Council Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships competitions are open to Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and international students. Applicants must be invited by the Department to submit an application to the competitions.

Applies to specific discipline-based research or study, or for students meeting certain criteria Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and international students.
