Concordia University/China Scholarship Council Joint Scholarship Agreement

Concordia University (CU) and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) have offered the Concordia University/China Scholarship Council Joint Scholarship since Fall 2009. The scholarship is intended to provide outstanding Chinese students with the opportunity to study abroad. The agreement is aimed at applicants who are applying to PhD programs and Postdoctoral Fellows. Priority is given to applicants to a PhD program.

Funding

Scholarship winners are covered for the following expenses:

PhD Candidates

  • The China Scholarship Council covers the student’s visa application fees and annual living allowance, including Overseas Student Health Cover;
  • Concordia University covers the tuition portion of fees for approved PhD candidates and will consider them in competition for further fellowships.

Postdoctoral Fellows

  • The China Scholarship Council provides the postdoctoral award, including Overseas Student Health Cover, and visa application fees;
  • Concordia University supervisors will match the postdoctoral award offered by the China Scholarship Council subject to the availability of internal and external awards.

Candidates are advised to access the China Scholarship Council website for additional details on funding.

Eligibility for Scholarship

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the scholarship:

PhD Candidates & Postdoctoral Fellows

  • Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application;
  • Applicants cannot be working or studying abroad at the time of application;
  • Applicants must receive an unconditional offer of admission from Concordia University.

Application Process

Applicants to the Concordia University/China Scholarship Council Scholarship must follow the procedures outline below:

PhD Candidates

  • Doctoral candidates must first apply for admission to Concordia University; candidates can access information on applying and the application form at the Connect2Concordia website;
  • Once candidates have applied, they will receive a Student Identification Number; they must contact the School of Graduate Studies at kwalsh@alcor.concordia.ca and state that they are interested in the Concordia University/China Scholarship Council Joint Scholarship. The student must include their name and ID number in the e-mail;
  • Upon receiving an unconditional offer of admission, the applicants must also apply to the China Scholarship Council for funding. access the following link to fill out an application form. Candidates can visit the CSC website to fill out an application form

Postdoctoral Fellows Candidates

  • Postdoctoral Fellows candidates must first approach the Faculty in which they are interested. Once they receive a Letter of Invitation from the Faculty, they can apply to the China Scholarship Council for funding;
  • Once they receive a Letter of Invitation, Postdoctoral Fellows should access the Postdoctoral Fellows site available on the School of Graduate Studies website to complete the forms necessary to pursue their training at Concordia University.

Deadlines

Applications for admission to Concordia University and for the China Scholarship Council must be submitted by the deadlines listed below:

PhD Candidates

  • Candidates must apply to Concordia University by the degree program’s deadline date or by March 1, whichever date is earlier. The application will be reviewed for admission for the upcoming Fall term. Since some degree programs may have an earlier date of admission, applicants are advised to consult the degree program’s section in the Graduate Calendar for specific admission dates.

Postdoctoral Fellows Candidates

  • These candidates must ensure that they contact the Faculty in time to receive a Letter of Invitation by the China Scholarship Council deadline.

China Scholarship Council

  • There are two (2) deadline dates to apply to the China Scholarship Council: March 20 and May 20. Applications submitted by the March 20 deadline will be reviewed in April. Applications submitted by the May 20 deadline will be reviewed in June.

Required Documents for Concordia

The following documents are required as part of the application package for Admission to Concordia University:

PhD Candidates

  • Required documents for admission to Concordia are listed on the Admissions Requirements webpage. Individual degree programs may have additional requirements. Candidates are advised to consult the degree program entries in the Graduate Calendar.

Postdoctoral Fellows Candidates

  • Candidates should consult with the Faculty in which they are interested to see what documents are required.

The following documents are required as part of the application package to the China Scholarship Council:

PhD Candidates

  • A completed application form (application forms and additional information on applying to the Council can be found on the China Scholarship Council website;
  • A paper copy of the signed CSC Application form;
  • A completed CSC Employer Reference Form;
  • A copy of the full application to Concordia University plus supporting documents such as communications with the supervisor;
  • A copy of the unconditional offer of admission from Concordia University.

Postdoctoral Fellows Candidates

  • A completed application form (application forms and additional information on applying to the Council can be found on the China Scholarship Council website;
  • Letter of Invitation from Concordia University;
  • Please contact the China Scholarship Council for information on what additional documents may be required.

NOTE: PhD applications to Concordia University must be received, along with all required documents, by the stated deadlines. All application fees must also be paid by this date. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed in time for the China Scholarship Council deadline.
